Plants and Puppets

These are couple activities we did during our P week, just because they start with p and it was a good time to get it done. :) Puppets Puppets can be a blast.  They have voices and mannerisms you don't see every day.  Our most recent Kiwi Crate was on storytelling and inside were the materials to make puppets.  Cool puppets.  Like all of the Kiwi Crate activities there are many great learning aspects to making a the craft. Small hands making big projects is an achievement for kids.  Not that it is difficult, but that they can look at it and say "I did that!"  When they may have doubted it at the beginning. These puppets were made using a wooden dowel, large pipe cleaner, large pom poms, double sided tape, string, and beads.  All of these supplies were provided inside the Kiwi Crate. These puppets were neat because of the way they moved, and you could change their shoes. Plants Our little seeds we planted are now to big to stay i...

Passing P (wrap up week 21)

Bible To help understand The Prodigal Son  The Dragons and I acted out the story.  We did this a couple times switching roles.  Little Dragon enjoyed the role play because he got to wear his spider man robe and be 'dad'. We used stuffed animals and play food as props. (I was busy playing too so there are no pictures) The felt board was another way The Dragons re told the story. Alphabet Inside this weeks folder were small pictures of letter p animals and items.  The Dragons painted these then added them to their letter 'p' for the alphabet wall. Using pink and purple markers (both start with p and purple is our week color) The Dragons practiced writing the letter p in their alphabet journal. The Dragons finished their week folder. Pigs Pigs as the main theme we had a lot of fun with them.  Me being a pig lover we have many stuffed pigs in the house and they came in handy this week. Little Dragons favori...

Victory Over V (wrap up week 18)

Bible The second half of the week we read of Jesus healing a blind man with mud and then the blind man washes his face in the pond. Bible Verse:   "I was blind and now I can see" -John 9:25 We did a craft that correlates to this story (below). 5 Senses We continued to work on 1 sense at a time.  Even though our focus was one 1 specific sense we would talk about the other senses used at the end of the activity. We had some Visitor Dragons this week so we sat around the table and drew each others senses.  I liked how these turned out so differently.  I thought they would all be portraits but some of the kids separated the senses, not making a face at all. Wednesday we focused on taste The best activity for taste is a buffet!  So many different tastes and textures.  We went to one of our favorite Chinese buffets to work on our sense of taste. Thursday we focused on touch I put together a touch sensory bin.  I put items inside that would i...

Hopping on (Week 16 wrap up)

Bible The end of the week the story of Jesus feeding 5000 was well known to the kids.  Both Dragons also had their bible verse memorized mid week. To conclude this week of 'hungry' we did a bible verse craft (below) and had 1 last picnic.  There were not as many animals this time but the Dragons enjoyed each others company and the banana bread.  :) Crafts Bread and fish basket Materials:  brown construction paper (2 shades) another piece of construction paper (kids choice) glue stick stickers markers pencil Step 1: I cut out basket shapes out of brown construction paper. Step 2: While the kids decorate their baskets with stickers and markers cut out bread shapes out of the other shade of brown construction paper.  Step 3: Each dragon chose what color they wanted their fish to be.  Step by step the dragons drew their own fish copying off the board.  Step 4: Cut out the fish and glue them and the bread pieces to the d...

B is for Boat

Boats.  It is all about boats this week.  The time Jesus spent on boats and more fun stuff. Bible Our focus is still on Jesus and this week we are taking about Jesus calming the storm and walking on water.  The kids did awesome with this unit.  We did some crafts that I break down below.  During each craft we talked about our bible stories and added something about Jesus to each of them. We used the boat puppet to help illustrate the story of Jesus calming the storm.  We discussed how Jesus walked on water and how Peter walked on water and the differences there.  Are song this week was "I have peace of a river in my soul" I liked this song it was very catchy.  Our bible verse is "those on the boat worshiped him and said 'truly you are the son of God'".   -Matthew 14:33 I checked out a book from the library for us to read some stories of Jesus from a different source.
